In this week's New Yorker, Sasha Frere-Jones takes a look at musical acts that use laptops in their live shows, confronting a question the 2008 concertgoer must grapple with far too frequently: Just what, exactly, is happening onstage? Frere-Jones first explains Serato Scratch Live, the program that allows D.J.'s to play their laptop's music libraries on virtual turntables, which makes carrying actual records around sort of hilarious. He then asks Brooklyn's Battles, who incorporate two laptops into a traditional guitar-bass-drums setup, to break down their show. Apparently the computers are just used for sprinkling sound effects, while good old-fashioned pedals create the guitar loops central to the band's sound. But what about Girl Talk, a.k.a. Gregg Gillis, who puts on one of the best shows around using only a laptop and his underwear?

Apparently, Gillis isn't just hitting play. On his computer, he has the premade loops heard on his albums, but, live, he's supposedly manipulating the loops to re-create the recorded mix, or to tweak them to his liking. Which is surprising and gratifying to those who still appreciate the sanctity of the live performance, but also kind of silly Gillis could, of course, just hit play and no one would know the difference. We do like that laptop musicians are policing themselves, however, since we're going to Girl Talk's Terminal 5 show in November and we'd feel stupid just standing around watching a guy click around on his iTunes for two hours.

Sheryl Crow - Crow Opens Up About Suicidal Thoughts

Rocker SHERYL CROW once suffered from such severe depression, she contemplated suicide.

The All I Wanna Do hitmaker, 46, has battled with the illness for years, but admits her lowest ebb came in her 20s.

She says, "I thought about suicide a lot in my twenties. I suffer from depression, and at its worst there was a six-month period in my twenties when I couldn't dress, days when I couldn't leave the house.

"Antidepressants helped and so did therapy, but depression is a chemical thing that some people go through. It's always been part of my life."

Cdn. alternative drama uses non-actors and improv to highlight homelessness

TORONTO - As many a film outtake has confirmed, even the most veteran of actors can blunder their lines, sometimes requiring multiple takes to get it right - especially when the script is improvised.

So imagine the pressure faced by Ottawa social worker Nargis (Sam Sam) Ahmed and her teen daughters, Asha and Sagal Jibril, when they stepped onto a film set for the first time, with no acting experience, to play the lead characters in the improvised drama "Family Motel," opening Friday in Toronto.

Sam Sam, as she prefers to be called, says the stress was worth it as it meant highlighting issues she faces every day on the job: homelessness, resettlement, family reunification and systemic racism, which are touched on in the film.

"I work with homeless families and I had worked in the shelter system for the city of Ottawa for many years," Sam Sam, a case co-ordinator with the city's Community and Protective Services, said in an interview.

"Part of my job was to place families in motels when shelters were full, so when the (producers) started telling me their storyline, I said, 'Oh, let me guess - the family is going to end up at the Concord Motel or Ridgemont Plaza?' Those were some of the motels in Ottawa that social services does use to place families, and the producer said, 'Oh my God, have you been reading our script?' because they had already chosen the Concord Motel to be the place where the movie would be shot."

"Family Motel" stars Sam Sam as a Somali refugee who gets evicted with her children from their Ottawa apartment and placed in a seedy motel for homeless families. Her real-life daughters also play her daughters in the film.

Billed as an alternative drama, the piece involves mostly non-professional actors, improvised scripts and community-based storylines with fictional characters.

Sam Sam and her daughters were cast after the director heard about them through the city's Somali community and a creative consultant phoned and asked them to audition.

"We're not professional actors so it was really hard," said Asha.

"But it was an experience and the reason why I came into this film was (because) this is more of a political film and it has a social issue attached to it."

The National Film Board of Canada, which co-produced the movie with Montreal's Instinct Films, says it pioneered the alternative drama genre 20 years ago and now filmmakers including Britain's Michael Winterbottom are adapting it to address social issues.

"Family Motel" director Helene Klodawsky, a longtime documentary maker based in Montreal, thought the genre would suit the piece best since finding homeless participants for docs can be tough.

Although the film centres on a Somali family, "it could be any new immigrant, it could be any Canadian," said Asha, who grew up volunteering for various social causes with her mother and sister.

Participating in the film inspired Sagal, who is entering Grade 10 in the fall, to pursue acting while Asha enters university in September to study life sciences.

Sam Sam delivers a strong performance in the film but doesn't plan to act again. She just wants to continue her social work and hopes "Family Motel" will one day serve as a teaching tool.

"There are a lot of people who don't know too many new Canadians but they have opinions about new Canadians and I wanted to take part in this movie to show people that 'It's OK, we're all the same. Here's a hard-working mom, she's struggling, she's going through many common things that we all go through,"' said Sam Sam.

"To bring that gap between the mainstream and the new Canadians also a little bit closer. I'm hoping that the movie will achieve that as well."

Hogan's wife asks judge to hold him in contempt

CLEARWATER, Fla. —

Hulk Hogan's estranged wife is asking a Florida judge to cite the wrestler for allegedly not paying his share of a $4.2 million Las Vegas condo.

Linda Bollea is asking that Hogan, whose real name is Terry Bollea, be held in contempt of court and jailed until he pays. A court order requires them to share the purchase of the condo at The Palms hotel and spa.

Linda Bollea is asking that Hogan be jailed in Pinellas County. That's where the couple's son is serving an eight-month sentence after pleading no contest to causing a crash that seriously injured his friend.

An assistant for Hogan's lawyer says the attorney wasn't immediately available. Linda Bollea's lawyer is expected to release a statement later Wednesday.

Usher Stands Far Above Competition With Second Chart-Topping Debut

When you think of debonair R&B star Usher, you think hits — tracks like "U Remind Me," "My Boo" and "Yeah!" You think about the fact that the dude has sold more than 30 million records worldwide. You think about the legions of fans that make each of his live gigs sell-out events, and words like "icon" start popping into your head. So it should surprise you that, over the course of more than a decade, Usher has had just one album open at #1 on Billboard's albums sales chart.

That is until last week, when the soulful crooner issued his latest studio effort, Here I Stand. According to the latest SoundScan totals, after selling more than 442,900 copies, Usher's latest knocks 3 Doors Down's self-titled album from the peak position of next week's chart. His previous release, 2004's Confessions, also bowed on top, but with significantly stronger sales: 1.1 million, to be exact.

But that stark difference in sales shouldn't taint Usher's latest victory one bit. In a market where albums are more often pilfered than purchased, 442,900 scans is no small potatoes. Besides, Usher basically crushed the rest of the field this week. His closest competitor, the "Sex and the City" soundtrack (featuring contributions from Fergie, Jennifer Hudson and Nina Simone), enters the chart at #2, with just 65,900 sold. The nation's third best-seller, 3 Doors Down, sold a mere 63,200 units.

Here I Stand and the "Sex and the City" set were among 16 new releases making their impact on next week's Top 200. Al Green's Lay It Down opened at #9 with 33,800 copies snatched up. But Green's was the only other newcomer to crack the top 10, which is rounded out by Bun B's II Trill at #4 (selling another 40,200 copies), Leona Lewis' Spirit at #5 (38,700), Frank Sinatra's Nothing but the Best at #6 (with 36,900 sold), Duffy's Rockferry at #7 (35,900), Mariah Carey's E=MC2 at #8 (35,600) and Death Cab for Cutie's Narrow Stairs at #10 (with another 33,400 scanned).

Elsewhere on the chart, Fergie's Dutchess LP, which was re-issued last week with four bonus tracks, enjoyed a 131 percent spike in sales, ending the week with 14,800 and climbing from #104 to #28 on the chart. Down in the #46 spot, selling 11,400 copies, is Fergie's Dutchess EP. Meanwhile, Cyndi Lauper returns to the chart at #41, with her Bring Ya to the Brink, which generated 12,000 first-week scans. Underoath's Survive Kaleidoscope opens at #81 with 8,000 copies sold, and Charlotte Sometimes' Waves & the Both of Us enters at #145, with sales reported at 4,300.

36 Crazyfists' Tide and Its Takers bows at #155, selling 4,200 copies. Spiritualized's Songs in A&E claims the #157 spot with 4,100 sold. Lastly, debuting at #199 with 3,100 sold, is KT Tunstall's Live From Soho.
